Check South Mississippi Correctional Institution Releases

To find someone released from South Mississippi Correctional Institution, use Mississippi’s state correctional records rather than a Greene County jail roster. SMCI is an MDOC prison for sentenced men, so a release may mean parole, earned-release supervision, sentence discharge, or movement elsewhere in the state system. Each result points to a different source. The MDOC offender record helps locate present custody and a tentative date, the parole search tracks community supervision, and MDOC Records confirms an actual discharge. A facility move alone is not an SMCI release to the community.

SMCI Release and Discharge Paths

South Mississippi Correctional Institution is a state prison operated by the Mississippi Department of Corrections. It is not the Greene County Jail. The Greene County Sheriff does not compute an SMCI sentence, decide parole, maintain the state discharge certificate, or control the MDOC public offender record. A request sent to the county may therefore produce no responsive state-prison record.

An SMCI prisoner may leave the institution in several ways. A move to another MDOC site is a transfer and keeps the person in state custody. Parole permits community placement under the authority of the Mississippi State Parole Board and field supervision. Earned-release supervision, often called ERS, also places an eligible person in the community while MDOC jurisdiction continues. Complete discharge follows the end of the sentence or supervision obligation and should be supported by the state record or discharge certificate.

The result should be described precisely. Parole and ERS are forms of supervised release, not proof that every obligation ended. A future tentative date is planning information. Only an actual custody update, supervision record, or completed discharge record shows what happened.

Confirm an SMCI State Release

Begin with the MDOC Inmate Search. The public tool accepts first and last name or an MDOC ID. The ID is the stronger key when known. Compare the identity, county of conviction, sentence, entry date, current location, and offense blocks before opening details. The exact public label is “Tentative Release Date.” It is not a verified departure time.

  1. Search the MDOC ID, or use the full name and compare the identifying record fields.
  2. Open the details and review current location, sentence information, and Tentative Release Date.
  3. If the location changed, treat that change as an institutional transfer unless MDOC identifies release.
  4. Search the separate MDOC Parolee Search for parole, ERS, or another community-supervision record.
  5. Ask MDOC Records for the actual release or discharge date, type, institution, supervision dates, and disclosable discharge record.

The public search is titled “Inmate Search” and was verified chiefly as a current-inmate tool. The research found no official statement that it retains every fully discharged person as a complete history. A missing result cannot prove complete discharge. Use the Parolee Search and MDOC Records as fallbacks. The Greene County release lookup also explains how the state path differs from county and federal custody.

A displayed date is tentative. MDOC says parole and ERS dates are not guaranteed, and release processing requires a completed discharge certificate.

SMCI Offender Record Fields

The MDOC detail interface carries more than a name. It can display a photograph, MDOC ID, physical descriptors, entry date, current location and unit, location-change date, sentence count, and total sentence length. Each offense block may list sentence length, county of conviction, sentence date, and Tentative Release Date. These are MDOC fields. They should not be attributed to the Sheriff simply because SMCI sits in Greene County.

Use the fields to test whether the result fits the right person and sentence. A county of conviction is not the same as a current institution. A location change does not explain why the move occurred. Sentence and tentative-date data can shift with credit, eligibility, forfeiture, statutory restrictions, Board action, classification, approved residence, court action, or another sentence.

Tentative Release Date
An MDOC planning field that can change and does not prove physical departure.
Parole
Conditional community release authorized by the Mississippi State Parole Board.
ERS
Earned-release supervision under which MDOC jurisdiction continues outside prison.
Discharge
Completion of the sentence or supervision obligation as documented by MDOC.

Note: A Greene County conviction may appear on the state record even when the person is housed far from Greene County.

SMCI Release Records Contact

Facility staff can address current institution questions, while MDOC Records is the correct office for offender time, jail credit, eligibility, and discharge records. Use the MDOC ID in correspondence whenever possible. The official directory does not support a records-office fee or business-hours claim, so confirm current submission terms directly.

A targeted state request should name the person, MDOC ID, institution, and sentence period. Ask for actual release or discharge date, release type, supervision start and end, sentence time sheet or other public computation, and the discharge certificate if disclosable. Do not ask SMCI or MDOC to certify a separate county-jail episode.

SMCI History and Release Context

SMCI was established in 1989. The official MDOC facility profile says the institution occupies 360 acres, contains 16 custody units, and has a maximum capacity of 3,082 beds. It holds men in several custody classifications. Those facts explain why a general Greene County search can mix a large state-prison population with the much different county detention operation.

The official profile above identifies SMCI as a state institution in Greene County. Its scale and location make MDOC identity fields crucial. “In Greene County” does not mean “in the Greene County Jail,” and the county Sheriff is not the custodian for SMCI release data.

SMCI Programs and Release Evidence

The SMCI profile documents chaplain religious and Bible classes, pastoral and crisis ministry, counseling, onsite health services through VitalCore, and work assignments. Those assignments include a Greene County road crew, a mobile crew, and a blueberry operation. They give useful context about life at the institution and local ties.

Program availability does not prove a named person enrolled, completed a course, earned release credit, or received an approved community placement. Do not use a program description as release evidence. Sentence computation, parole decisions, ERS review, residence approval, and discharge processing remain person-specific MDOC matters. The official state record must connect those steps to the individual.

SMCI Release Geography Explained

Greene County’s facility geography is unusually easy to reverse. SMCI is physically in Greene County near Leakesville. George/Greene County Correctional Facility, despite its name, is in Lucedale in George County. Both facilities house state inmates, but neither name proves a return destination after release. A person may relocate to an approved residence, report to a supervising office, transfer within MDOC, or enter another lawful custody path.

The official current-location field resolves where an MDOC offender is held, while the supervision and discharge records resolve what happens next. If an SMCI record changes to George/Greene or another institution, record it as transfer unless the state says otherwise. If Parolee Search returns the person, community supervision continues. A complete discharge requires stronger state confirmation.

Note: George/Greene’s shared name does not make the Greene County Sheriff custodian of its state-offender discharge records.

SMCI Release Alerts and Supervision

Mississippi SAVIN/VINE covers MDOC offenders and can issue alerts for release from custody, transfer, temporary movement, return to custody, escape, and abscond supervision. Registration may be anonymous. Because several alert types involve movement without community release, read the event label and confirm it against the MDOC record.

For community supervision, the MDOC Parolee Search accepts name, ID, city, or county criteria. A hit can support that a person is under supervision, but it does not reproduce an SMCI exit transaction or prove full sentence discharge. The shared George/Greene Probation and Parole Office is in Lucedale, George County, not at SMCI. Call that office for local supervision direction when the state record points there.

A SAVIN notice, parole record, tentative date, and discharge certificate answer different questions. Use the alert for timely awareness, the offender record for custody and sentence context, the parole record for community supervision, and MDOC Records for the actual discharge history.
